Science Exploration Day set for May 16th

The preserve committee is happy to announce the Science Exploration Day for 2026 is set for Saturday May 16th from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM.   

  • Registration begins at 8:30 AM
  • 3 lessons will run concurrently at 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
  • Lessons will be hands-on in nature and last approximately 50 minutes
  • Lessons will be geared towards students in grades 2-6 but learners of ALL Ages are welcome to attend!  Parents are asked to accompany young children.
  • Lunch will be provided at 12 Noon!  (Thank you Kyle’s Market for the generous donation!)  Lunch includes grilled wieners, chips, fruit and drinks.

All about Fish!  Learn all about the fish that live at the preserve.  Species identification, fish anatomy and unique adaptations.  Fish habitats and ecosystems.  Also learn some basic fishing techniques and try to catch a fish from our new fishing pier!    Retired science instructor Paul Verdon will lead this lesson.

Phenology! Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.  As the seasons change, so do Plants and Animals that call the preserve home.  Learn about and explore these changes and cycles that occur each year.  Retired science instructor Mark Mosey will lead this lesson.

Tree and Shrub Ecology! Learn how to identify trees and shrubs of the preserve.   Learn about Invasive species and why they are NOT good for the preserve. And help plant shrubs at the preserve!   UW-Stout Biology Professor Keith Gilland will lead this lesson.
